Your family room is likely the place you and your family hang out, lounge, binge watch your favorite TV show, host movie night and generally gather. You may or may not allow eating in that space, but most of us crave a spot to put our feet up and get comfy. Visiting a museum is a meaningful cultural experience but the “Do Not Touch” warning signs and the yellow ropes that block our proximity to the art, do not lend themselves to the function and coziness we seek in our living rooms. Your next Family Room project will combine practicality, and functionality with comfort when you focus on these family room trends.

1. Comfy and Functional

You and your people want your family room to embrace you like a cozy blanket on a crisp Fall day so your furniture will be built for lounging. Space planning and furniture placement is a key element in bringing a room together so look for pieces similar in scale and symmetry even if the pieces vary in texture or are fro m different periods. Refinish your Mom’s secretary desk, add unique hardware and it will look special with the contemporary TV console. Though an eclectic style involves combining styles and periods, you can choose a focal point with an eye-catching element like a fireplace or bold art. Carry this eclectic personality throughout your home to create flow and harmony.

My Creative Process: Messy and Marvelous

If you’ve ever watched a popular television program that portrays Interior Designers executing a design project, you have marveled at the immaculate workspace they create to house their tools of the trade...Obsessively organized swatches by color, pattern, and fabric grade hanging open on labeled shelving (labeled with a label maker) adjacent to the wallcovering books by design company and style preference. You can’t have the French Country wallcovering books mingling with the Traditional wallcovering books! The shelving is obviously accessible and of course, it’s in crisp white and backed in a wallcovering of the designer’s choosing. The paint chips are cleverly displayed in the three-ring binder-style chip book and they are side by side on the same shelving which we know is labeled using the label maker she can’t live without. Carpet samples, tiles, and wood flooring have their own custom-created nook. Upholstery samples are hanging on curtain rods by curtain clips so each individual fabric is visible. A sketchbook sits on the desk with the MacBook that the designer uses for virtual space planning. There is a pink stapler, a matching bin from The Container Store for monogrammed pens and pencils and a lamp with a custom shade for the best lighting. There are inspiration boards on the wall so the designer can keep her vision front and center. Each vendor for lighting and furniture is at her fingertips and she shows you the digital space and design plan in her well-lit, accessorized, chic office.

So now that you have this ideal image in your brain, you can rewind, delete and join me in my reality. Let’s just say that my design space resembles my 14-year old son’s room after he has engaged in a frenzied safari searching for the only acceptable t-shirt in his stash of hundreds. The drawers are left open to capacity, the floor is littered with books and papers, and the books gave birth to baby books and papers puked up multiple papers. There is a desk but you can barely see the Amazon echo, the MacBook or the stapler. The floor is underfoot and we know this because our feet, which are attached to our ankles, are standing on it but it’s an obstacle course that could even challenge the highest scoring American Ninja Warrior. Hold on to the wall because you could trip and fall but don’t worry because you can always use the helmet and the skateboarding knee pads on the floor somewhere to buffer the fall.

You get what I’m layin’ down here. My creative process takes place in a space that would make Martha Stewart cry and beg for her Momma. I love my office in all of its chaotic glory. You may need a GPS to find my Vanguard catalog but I know for sure that it is underneath the wallcovering book I used on the Goldstein’s project. The Sherwin Williams paint color fan deck is on top of the Benjamin Moore fan deck on the floor to the right of the door and I’m sure of it. The wood finishes are spread out like dominoes and yippee, there is my Architex book making nice to its neighbor, the empty bin. The empty bin may have been home to the luxury vinyl samples that I grabbed for the basement reno I am designing in D.C, and I did not put it back because I didn’t want it to be lonely so I kindly placed it on my desk with its dear friend, the MacBook. My desk is a modern, utilitarian surface for my most creative and inspired projects but you will likely be unable to locate the label maker I bought years ago or the color-coded file folders that I purchased to be labeled by the aforementioned label maker.

Thinking of starting an interior design project with little kids? Let’s face it, kids are cute, but they can be messy and a little hard on the home at times. With children playing tag in the living room and trails of goldfish crumbs around the house, the fear of maintaining a newly styled home is real. With proper planning and a knowledgeable interior design specialist, you can still have your dream home with kids!

As with any new designing prospect I face, I want to know about you and your family. Once we have a clear image of what you need from your home, the process gets easier from there! Be honest, do your kids break everything they touch? That’s okay! If small accessories won’t work for you, we can find stylish yet simplistic and sturdy pieces. If your kids (or pets) are prone to spills and you’re used to hearing one too many “uh-ohs” from the kitchen, tough, stain-resistant fabrics, such as Crypton Fabric , will be your best friend in your new home. Storage rooms and areas can also be incorporated to organize your children’s toys, which always seem to be multiplying.

Does My Living Room Have to be Completely Custom?

I pride myself in being the type of interior designer who does not need to order everything custom for my clients. When I use the word custom, I am defining this as having the ability to choose different wood finishes (both in wood species and color), the fabric can be selected fro m 1000’s of different options, the cushions can be various degrees of firmness, hardware can change fro m brass to satin nickel, etc. I’m sure you get the idea.

Don’t misunderstand – I love custom pieces and use them often in my design plans. I don’t, however, think it is always necessary to confuse matters with so many options. For almost any scenario, designers have access to hundreds, if not thousands, of unique tables, occasional chairs, bookcases, dining tables, etc., and there will always be something that will fit perfectly into your space without going overboard.

The quality of custom upholstery pieces may be higher but in a living room where the space has less traffic, the type of frame construction isn’t as significant. Below are some of my most recent favorite stock items that are not custom and can be ordered “as is.”

As an Interior Designer in Maryland, which includes the entire DC Metro area, I am consistently and perpetually challenged by the amount of time interior design, renovations, space planning, and basically every part of the process, will and should take.

To be asked the questions, “In your experience, how long will this bathroom remodel take, from start to finish?” or “If we start now and I make quick decisions, will my living room be done in time for Thanksgiving” may seem like I should have very simple answers but truthfully, it is very uncomfortable for a designer to even try to guess.

This article from Fox News is another great article about this problem. As much as we love HGTV and other home improvement shows for even putting the thought of interior design or renovation work in the heads of our clients, false expectations are often set due to these shows.

The software these shows use for their 3D renderings is not only very expensive but the final product you see is very time-intensive. When a client requests space planning, I am very happy to show a client how a room will be laid out with various pieces and will include the size of each piece but a color, 3D rendering, takes many hours. Again, I have no problem providing this service but it will not be completed in one hour and many clients are shocked at how many hours are being billed for the work they have requested. While I try to set realistic expectations in the beginning, because of the various home improvement shows out there, the client often can’t fathom that the process takes longer than a few hours.

Every client experience is different and every renovation or interior design project varies depending on budget, scope, personalities, and definitely the unknowns, such as fabric or product delays and what unexpectedly might be found behind a wall.

So when you request an Interior design consultation , please be aware that this is real life, not an hour-long episode that has been edited and condensed and that most designers are fair and just want your home to look amazing!

Crypton Fabric - Is it too good to be true?

Crypton fabric seems to be the new rage with all of the upholstery vendors I am currently ordering from. Most of my clients have children and/or pets and it is so nice to finally be able to offer a fabric for sofas, chairs, ottomans, etc., that is stain, moisture and odor resistant. Yes, you read this correctly! You no longer have to freak out about your kids eating an ice cream cone on your brand new sofa or your new puppy curling up on your favorite chair after he ran to get the ball in the creek. You would never know these fabrics have these qualities since they are just as soft and feel just as luxurious as any other fabric you would typically select for high usage pieces of furniture.

Ratner Bathroom Makeover

Bathroom makeovers are apparently in season! Within the last few months, I’ve completed two major bathroom makeovers. Each client was in dire need of a drastic new look for respective bathrooms. And in each case, I did not disappoint. Take a look at my most recent bathroom makeover.

With this bathroom makeover , I changed every little detail, all the way down to the outlet covers. I started by giving the bathroom a fresh coat of paint. The previous color–a light beige, blended into the fixtures. The new color we selected paired well with the new fixtures and details, but also created an interesting contrast that instantly captures the eye.

I replaced the boring beige tiles with marble flooring, giving the new bathroom a sophisticated and modern touch. We mixed and matched several patterns throughout the bathroom to create interest. We made major upgrades to both the bathtub and shower, going with a more contemporary look.

As I’ve said countless times before, an invitation into your home is a personal connection that I value and respect. When a client invites me into their space, I take care to incorporate their vision and dreams into every decision. My personal knowledge of design combined with my clients personal vision make every project a unique and creative process.

Giving an Old Bathroom a New Look

I wanted to share a project I recently completed. The client was in need of a new look for her old bathroom. Her goal–to create a relaxing, spa-like bathroom that she could unwind in after a hectic workday. We spent a bit of time discussing her taste, and together we developed a clear vision for her new bathroom look.

As you can see, this was a significant bathroom remodel projec t. My team and I opened up the wall from the bathtub to the shower to create more space and a cohesive look. New neutral tiles were added throughout the bathroom, with a few bold touches to liven up the space. We left the skylight for natural lighting and added artwork for interest.

My client was thrilled with the bathroom transformation , as was I! My work as an interior designer is meaningful, fun and challenging and I have been fortunate enough to design spaces for people who value my creative and skilled approach to design.

How long does the Interior Design Process take?

When I’m meeting with a new client, the most common question asked is “How long does this process take?” I have a 4-hour minimum in order to start a new project and without a doubt, the client wants an “average” of how long a particular room might take to design from start to finish. The truth is, the amount of time an interior design project takes is typically dependent upon the amount of time it takes for the client to make decisions.

I go through a whole series of questions when first meeting with a client in order to narrow down the style, functionality of the space, budget, etc., so when I come back with the initial selections for the project, I should have some very good options that fit all the criteria that we spoke about. But sometimes a client doesn’t realize what they like until they see what they DON’T like and then we have to start from scratch. A few years ago, I had a client who told me she hates blue but in the end, after bringing her the other tones she expressed interest in, we ended up with a blue/gray color palette because she didn’t necessarily understand there were many different shades that fall under the blue category. Oftentimes, it’s a good idea for the client to do some research on Houzz.com or in magazines to see what color palettes they are drawn to in order to cut down on time. The designer can often make selections quickly but the decision making skills on the client’s end are equally as important!

Pantone Color of the Year

For the first time in history, the Pantone Color of the Year for 2016 is actually 2 colors! Rose Quartz ( 13-1520 ) and Serenity ( 15-3919 ). The only thing I think of when seeing these colors is cotton candy! I read that these two colors are supposed to be bring calm and relaxation but I think that might just be the case for a baby nursery. I can honestly say that instead of relaxation, it brings me anxiety over the possibility that the pastels from the early 90’s might come back!

You Call That Customer Service?

In January of this year, I had an opportunity to decorate a penthouse in Washington, DC from start to finish in only 8 days, for clients moving here from another country. The apartment needed to be furnished, site unseen by the client until they walked in the day of their arrival. I am finally sitting down to write a few blogs about my adventure, as there was a lot that I experienced during those 8 days.

Because of the tight deadline, I was left with no option other than to buy directly off of the retail floor and the experiences I had with local retailers was eye opening. After spending hours making phone calls to various furniture stores in the area, I finally found one – and only one – retailer who would sell directly from the floor as opposed to custom ordering.

The staff knew we were coming in to potentially make large purchases, as I had briefed the manager on the situation beforehand. Six hours and $48,000 later, we had purchased most of the main items for the penthouse. Everything from sofas, rugs, china cabinets, dining table and chairs, accessories and artwork, was purchased and scheduled to be delivered 7 days later.

I would think that any retail store that had even the potential of such a large sale the first week of the year would be ecstatic and try to be very accommodating to designers. In the 6 hours we were there (did I mention it was during a snowstorm?), the staff did not even offer us a bottle of water.

With a $48,000 payday (and I’m assuming we took the pressure off of their first quarter sales), they were not willing to waive the $300 delivery fee. Instead, they chose to explain how they made exceptions for us which included splitting up a pair of vases that otherwise would have been sold together. Really?

I’m not sure I would return to this store unless I had another project where buying off of the floor was a necessity. What happened to common customer service?

I am in the midst of a huge kitchen renovation for a client and while you would think that the biggest decisions would be about cabinetry and flooring, it turns out that the small details are what take the longest. I didn’t think about the outlets, light switches and switch plates until I went into a lighting showroom and saw the many amazing options out there. USB ports combined with regular outlets, pop-up outlets, whisper dimmer switches, switch plates with your own wallpaper, and so much more!! I’ve settled on a combination of many of these but there’s reason to go with the same old boring things you’ve seen everywhere!

Inspiration in Mexico

I just returned from a short vacation in Cancun, Mexico and stayed at a gorgeous resort, www.nizuc.com. Aside from being the most beautiful resort I’ve ever stayed in, I was completely enamored with the architecture and design throughout the resort. Everything was done on a huge scale and was consistent throughout every area, from the lobby, to the individual rooms, to the spa and restaurants. I have added a few photos so you can see the grand scale of the light fixtures, furniture and spaces in general.

What a Transformation!!

Over the weekend, I was privileged to be a part of a project for Transformations of Montgomery County. This is an organization that creates residential settings that promote healthy, positive growth. In this case, in conjunction with FutureBound, we transformed a space for a young man who has aged out of the foster care system. We had some great donations from my clients and vendors I work with and the end result is below. The resident was extremely grateful and said he “feels like he lives in a condo and is finally settled.” What a rewarding project!

Enough of Winter Already…but Perfect time to Take Notes!

Yes, I know we are all completely sick of Winter. The past 2 months have definitely made up for the boring, mild Winters from the past few years. We are all spending WAY too much time indoors, going from room to room just for a change of scenery. But as you spend time in each room, it’s a perfect time to start making a list of the things you would love to change. Are you tired of looking at the same lamps and accessories from when you first got married? Does your rug look worn? Is your furniture starting to feel uncomfortable, past the “lived in” type of comfort? Also, be honest with yourself as to whether or not your space looks dated. No, not everything eventually comes back in style. This is a great time to start making a plan or consult with me to help you start creating one so you have goals in mind to freshen up your home. If you have ever been tempted to ask for a discount from those trusting, hard-working service men and women in your life, this article is perfect for you to read! It will help explain why those of us in the service industry feel strongly about our fees and why we are proud to not be the cheapest game in town.

On that note, I have raised my rate starting in 2014. I can say with confidence that I will save my client’s money in the long run due to my ability to sell products well below retail. While I consider this to be a perk of working with me, I do not consider myself to be a discount decorator!

I love my job and the people I get to meet along the way and look forward to an interesting, prosperous 2014!!!

My Favorite Window Treatment Ideas

There are hundreds of styles of window treatments out there but my personal favorite is the woven wood. If you're looking for window treatment ideas , woven wood is a great option. They are appropriate for many types of rooms, from a dining room to a playroom and anything in between. The many patterns and colors to choose from allow this type of shade to be used in a more formal setting as well as a casual space. There are varying degrees of opaqueness but you can always put a liner on the back if you want complete privacy. They can be a stand-alone product which doesn’t need anything else on the window or you can hang panels if you choose. Now can you see why I love woven wood so much? The options are endless!

Minutes Matter is an amazing software program that I use to help my clients visualize the selections I have made for their home. I can import the actual fabric onto upholstered pieces, put the rugs on the floor, add window treatments, furniture and more. This takes the guessing game away for the client who oftentimes has trouble picturing what I have selected or how everything will gel together.

It’s hard to believe it’s 2014 but with the New Year there are many goals to be set! Why not start with your home? Pick one room that you are completely sick of and have been hoping to update for the past 5 years or more. Start by checking out Pinterest or Houzz and see what inspires you, what speaks to you in terms of how you want your room to make you feel when you step into it.

Most of my clients don’t have a budget when I ask, but try to come up with a reasonable number that you are willing to spend for your update. And then, of course, CALL ME !!! The Pantone color for 2014 has been announced!

Radiant Orchid is a beautiful shade of purple and there are many fabrics (I carry many lines of fabric, such as Duralee and Fabricut) that can be made into window treatments, seat coverings, pillows and more! It can change a neutral room into a space that’s much more interesting and alive!

I LOVE wallpaper!

Yes, I said I love wallpaper. Most of my clients cringe when I even utter that word, but I am not talking about the wallpaper of yesteryear that was in your grandmother’s house that you watched peel off the walls year after year.

I am referring to the gorgeous wallpapers that are made now, that can completely transform a space by putting it on one wall, the ceiling, or in an entire room. The patterns and materials (my powder room wallpaper has glass beads on it!!) that I have seen are stunning and make a space completely unique. Shades of White

It has been proven that Eskimos have at least 12 different words for snow. Some experts say there are up to 400 words to describe snow in Alaska. Here are a few examples:

Tlapa – powder snow

Tlacringit – snow that is crusted on the surface

Kayi – drifting snow

Tlapat – still snow

You get the idea. But sometimes I feel that the same goes for the hundreds of shades of WHITE paint. In my Benjamin Moore color wheel of whites, there are so many variations it will make your head spin.

Dove White, Cloud White, Navajo White, White Diamond, Linen White – these are just a few that come to mind. But there really are differences between them and you have to be very careful when picking a white for walls, trim or ceiling. Some have slight shades of pink, some have brown or yellow in them and some have gray. My best advice is to hire a professional to help you make your selection ( hint, hint ) so a major mistake isn’t made.

Choosing the Right Headboard

I love padded headboards. I don’t know if it’s because my Mom always had one and then I got one when I moved into my first house, but I’ve never understood how a headboard like the one pictured below could be comfortable. Choosing the right headboard is important because most of us, keep the same head board for years.

If you EVER sit up in bed to read, watch TV or do anything other than sleep, I much prefer a soft surface without having to prop up four pillows, don’t you?

There are many headboard shapes and sizes to choose from and you can typically select other details such as fabric, nail heads, tufting and wood trim.

Do you have bare walls because you don’t think you can afford original pieces of art? How do you choose art for your home? Well, you don’t need to dip into your kids’ college funds to have beautiful, interesting art on your walls. Many companies have gorgeous art to choose from and while they are very affordable, your friends and family will think you spent a lot of money to complete your space. Many times a print just needs a frame that looks custom in order to make it look valuable. Saving Clients Money with Beautiful Results

Many people hesitate to hire a decorator or designer because they think it will cost them way more than their budget allows. I know that all decorators work differently, but I’d like to explain how I work, and in the end, save my clients money.

I have a very reasonable hourly rate with a 4-hour minimum (time includes face to face consultations, research, shopping, communication above the norm).
After the initial consultation, I typically have a grasp of the project, the clients’ likes and dislikes, hopes and dreams for the space, etc., and start to make selections.
Now, here’s where my clients save a significant amount of money— I carry many lines of furniture, accessories, lighting, rugs, fabric, artwork, and more, all which I purchase WHOLESALE and resell to my clients WELL BELOW RETAIL PRICING. I average 30% below suggested retail pricing.

A few things to note about this information. I am very particular about which lines I carry. While they do cover all price ranges and styles, I try very hard to find lines that have unique and interesting products, while staying practical, functional and affordable.

Transforming Interiors with Fabric

Design Inspiration: Candace Olson

When Trading Spaces, one of the home makeover shows started on TLC in 2000, the reality home shows really took off. But there was only one designer from one show that I started to follow and really connect with. Candice Olson, in my opinion, is the ONLY designer I would invite into my home, talk to for a few minutes and say “Go ahead, redesign my whole house and I’ll be back when you say you are done.” Yes, I love to design my own home, but it’s much more difficult to make decisions for my own spaces than to do it for my clients. Her creativity, class and amazing use of space never cease to amaze me. Candice is the end-all, be-all designer for me and I strive to be just like her one day (although I know her height of 6 feet will be impossible to achieve).

The most satisfying part of my job is to see any before and after when a project has been completed. By the time a job has ended, the client typically has forgotten what the original bathroom space looked like and is very excited to jump into the newly designed, more functional living area. Below, are some bathroom renovation ideas you can incorporate into your next bathroom remodeling project.

The new master bathroom below is basically unrecognizable from the original and this client doubled her shower and storage space just by knocking down one wall between the sink area and the toilet/shower space. We were also able to add a sit-down makeup vanity (something every woman would love!!)

Tips for Bathroom Remodel/Makeover

Even if you can’t afford to do a complete bathroom renovation makeover, you can make some minor changes that will make a big difference – change out the builder-grade lighting, faucets and mirrors, and update the hardware on the cabinets. Simple changes can make your bathroom appear as if it has had a complete remodel.

I can’t tell you how many of my clients have lived with either white or cream-colored walls for 25 years out of fear of committing to a color. While there is a place for white walls (for example, in a room that has a lot of colorful artwork that the client wants to highlight), most spaces are warmer and more inviting with some sort of color on the walls. I admit – for the average person, it can be overwhelming to pick the right shade that you feel will give you the feeling you want when you walk into the room. I actually have a Benjamin Moore paint wheel that only has shades of white and off-white, and there are 161 colors. I’m not kidding!

My new website is live today! I am very excited about it, and after spending a significant amount of time trying to figure out how I wanted the site to come across to new and existing clients, I feel that the site is functional, represents my personality and my company, and is a place where others will feel comfortable browsing.

When I recently came across the “4 Signs It’s Time to Redesign Your Website,” according to the Online Marketing Institute, I realized how similar a website redesign is to redecorating a room in your home.

Lack of responsiveness – I believe every room in your home should evoke some sort of feeling, depending on the use for the room. Does your bedroom make you feel relaxed? Is your family room comfortable for everyday living?
Outdated Information – Just as you don’t want your website to be outdated in terms of content and technology, you also don’t want your home to be out of style, dated or tired. There are often easy updates that can be made, such as changing out lamps, throw pillows or a rug that will make a room more current rather than investing in a complete overhaul.
Long Load Times – While a website shouldn’t take too long to load, neither should a room take too long to redesign. Many of the home shows on TV are unrealistic when rooms are redone in a day, but a good decorator should help the client make decisions quicker than if they were on their own.
Visitor Loss – If you aren’t getting much traffic on your website, you know it is time to for a redesign. The same goes for your home – if you find your friends aren’t interested in coming over after inviting them several times, you might want to evaluate your space to see if guests aren’t comfortable with the seating, have no place to put down their food and drink, or feel relaxed when they come over.
